Barbecue sauce originates from America and is expected to have been used in the 17th century. It was not until the early 1900s that the first commercial barbecue sauces were introduced. Depending on the region, the flavour direction can vary: Sometimes barbecue sauce is tomato-based, other times vinegar and mustard make up for this popular sauce.
